Eleven distinct camps and lodges across Tanzania’s top seven wilderness areas.

From the vast south with Nyerere and Ruaha, to the wild Katavi and Mahale in the west, and onto the north with the legendary Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. Each Nomad property is rooted in conservation, local heritage, expert guiding, and unforgettable immersion.

Tanzania delivers extraordinary diversity – and Nomad Tanzania offers the most immersive way to experience it. From the iconic savannas of the Serengeti and misty Ngorongoro highlands to Tarangire’s baobab-strewn woodlands, the remote chimpanzee forests of Mahale, and the untouched wilderness of Katavi and Ruaha – this is a country of staggering contrasts. And Nomad has been deeply rooted in its wild corners for more than 30 years.

Nomad Tanzania began in the early 1990s as a pioneering mobile safari operator.  As demand grew for deeper and more sustainable travel experiences, Nomad slowly and intentionally expanded, building a collection of small, stylish camps that tread lightly and place guests at the heart of the wild. Today, they offer access to some of the most pristine, wildlife-rich, and soul-stirring landscapes in Africa.

With just eleven camps – from classic mobile safaris to more permanent lodges. Each camp is distinct in character but united by warm hospitality, exceptional guiding, and an unshakable commitment to conservation and community.

Whether tracking the great migration across the Serengeti, walking in lion country in Ruaha, or catching your first glimpse of a chimpanzee in Mahale, Nomad connects travellers to Tanzania’s wild places with purpose and authenticity.

The impact of your stay
IMPACT: very high

Nomad Tanzania was built on a belief that exceptional safaris must go hand in hand with responsibility – towards people, wildlife, and wild places. Across its camps and regions, Nomad partners with grassroots organisations through the Nomad Conservation Fund, which channels guest contributions and Nomad’s support into community and conservation projects.

Every stay contributes through:
  • Nomad Conservation Fund: Established in 2007, the Fund provides finance, logistics, and advice to grassroots organisations working in education, healthcare, and conservation. Guests can visit supported projects or donate directly.

  • Supporting Local Education & Healthcare: Partner organisations, with help from the Fund, deliver school sponsorships, classroom builds, clean water provision, and healthcare outreach – including maternal health support in Mahale and Tarangire.

  • Conservation Partnerships: Through the Fund, Nomad contributes to work by the Frankfurt Zoological Society (Katavi & Mahale), Ruaha Carnivore Project (Ruaha), and Honeyguide Foundation (Tarangire & Serengeti), helping fund anti-poaching patrols, predator conservation, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation.

  • Local Employment & Guiding: Over 95% of staff are Tanzanian, many from neighbouring communities. Nomad also runs its own guide training programme to build careers in conservation and tourism.

  • Eco-Design & Footprint: Camps run on solar power, use bucket showers and eco loos, avoid single-use plastics, and are built from natural materials. Seasonal camps like Serengeti Safari Camp and Chada Katavi are dismantled annually, leaving no trace.

  • Chimpanzee Research & Protection: Greystoke Mahale supports the Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Project, one of the world’s longest-running primate research programmes.

By choosing Nomad, guests contribute to a wider effort to safeguard Tanzania’s wild spaces and empower the communities living alongside them.

Serengeti Safari Camp, Serengeti

Serengeti Safari Camp is Nomad Tanzania’s original mobile camp, designed to move seasonally through the Serengeti ecosystem in response to the Great Migration.

This is a safari shaped by movement and timing, placing guests close to the migration throughout the year and allowing wildlife encounters to unfold naturally as the herds shift across the plains.

Operating as a fully mobile camp, Serengeti Safari Camp relocates several times a year to follow the Great Migration as it moves through different regions of the Serengeti. This flexibility allows the camp to remain close to large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra, as well as the predators that follow them, without relying on a single fixed location.

The camp is traditionally styled and intentionally simple, reflecting the classic East African safaris of earlier decades. Accommodation is comfortable and well considered, but the focus remains firmly on time spent in the field, early starts, full days of exploration and evenings in camp shaped by the day’s sightings.

Operated by Nomad Tanzania, Serengeti Safari Camp reflects a long-standing commitment to thoughtful guiding, low-impact camp operations and a safari experience that prioritises wildlife, timing and immersion over permanence.

Kusini, Serengeti

Kusini Serengeti is positioned in the remote southern Serengeti, an area defined by open short-grass plains and vast horizons.

This is a safari shaped by season and spectacle, placing guests in the heart of the southern Serengeti during the Great Migration’s calving period.

Kusini Serengeti operates in a quiet, little-visited region of the southern Serengeti, an area that comes alive between January and March when large herds of wildebeest and zebra gather to calve. This seasonal concentration of prey attracts high levels of predator activity, offering compelling wildlife viewing across wide, open plains.

The camp is deliberately simple and low-key, allowing the landscape and wildlife to take centre stage. Game drives focus on the open plains, where visibility is excellent and encounters often unfold in full view, without the need for long drives or dense vegetation.

Operated by Nomad Tanzania, Kusini Serengeti reflects a long-standing commitment to seasonal camp placement, strong guiding and an experience led by timing and location. It offers a focused and immersive safari during one of the Serengeti’s most important wildlife events.
