Wild Expeditions is a pioneering collective of safari camps and expeditions operating in remote parts of Africa

These journeys suit travellers who value immersion and time spent in truly wild places. The luxury here is access itself, to extraordinary places and experiences encountered by only a few discerning travellers each year.

Karangoma is the result of a partnership with local elder Olatotse Sarefo and is rooted in Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu culture.

The name itself is a Sembukushu word describing ‘drum beating, ancestral healing, bringing good future to the tribe, or, when one is ill, cure dancing’. It is exactly this essence of healing and harmony that the camp seeks to offers its guests in their reconnection with nature and traditional cultures.

And what better place to do that than the productive and beautiful Okavango Delta where this small, exclusive camp offers the opportunity for some truly special game viewing and connection with the natural world. Karangoma’s 6 tented suites are hidden on a shaded peninsula with gorgeous views out across the floodplains.

From Botswana and Zimbabwe, to Ethiopia, Madagascar and some epic adventures in-between, Wild Expeditions is firmly leading the way in providing travellers with experiences across unique parts of Africa which honour the habitats, wildlife and people of these environments.

The future of Africa’s wildest places and traditional tribes increasingly requires conscious and intrepid travellers seeking these bucket list journeys, together with brave stakeholders who are committed to providing meaningful and immersive travel experiences.

We invite you to take a Wild Expedition.

Karangoma
7 Tents + 1 Family Family

Consisting of just 8 tented suites (one being a family tent), Karangoma is hidden in a wooded peninsula that juts out into the floodplains and overlooks a well-trodden game path to water. The tents are placed on low wooden decks (for high flood years), but the interlinking paths through camp are all down on the characteristic fine grey earth of the Okavango, weaving through croton and mopane and ensuring our guests feel connected to the landscape while they are in camp.

Located outside of a national park afford Karangoma the opportunity to conduct a really wide range of activities. Day and night game drives are of course the mainstay in search of the wildlife of the Okavango, but walking offers a different perspective (and emotion), as does boating along the Magweqgana and especially poling a mokoro through the secondary waterways. Furthermore guests have a chance to engage with local Bukakhwe San community members and see first hand their conservation efforts.

WHY HERE?

- Excellent sightings of a wide range of large mammal species; from the zebra, tsessebe, lechwe and wildebeest of the floodplains to the elephant, sable, and roan of the woodland, plus all the larger carnivores from lion and spotted hyaena to leopard, cheetah and wild dog.
- A wide range of activities from day and night game drives and walking, to boating and mekoros (season dependent).
- A camp with a direct partnership with members of the local community.

The impact of your stay
IMPACT: high

Wild Expeditions operates in remote regions where tourism is limited and infrastructure is minimal. Their presence in areas such as Karangoma is rooted in a long-term approach to travel that prioritises local partnerships, community involvement and respectful engagement with wildlife landscapes.

In the Karangoma area, rural communities live alongside wildlife and experience the day-to-day realities of human–wildlife coexistence, including crop damage by elephants and livestock losses to predators. Wild Expeditions recognises that meaningful conservation in this context is closely linked to the wellbeing and involvement of the local community.

Working in partnership with the Bukakhwe San community of Gudigwa and a local conservation NGO, Wild Expeditions supports initiatives focused on community participation, employment, skills-sharing and cultural exchange. Alongside this, discussions and planning are underway around improved livestock herding practices and veterinary support, aimed at reducing stock losses and strengthening herd health over time.

Every stay contributes through:
  • A Community & Conservation Levy of US$50 per person per night, which supports community and conservation initiatives in the NG12 area adjoining the Okavango Delta.
  • Ongoing partnership with Karangoma and the Bukakhwe San community of Gudigwa, including revenue sharing, local employment opportunities and training.
  • Support for cultural initiatives that celebrate traditional knowledge and skills, including the renowned tracking expertise and musical heritage of the Bukakhwe people.
  • Collaboration with a local conservation NGO on approaches to human–wildlife coexistence, including community engagement and the exploration of early-warning systems linked to predator movements.

Through these partnerships, Wild Expeditions aims to contribute to a model of tourism that supports rural livelihoods while encouraging coexistence between people and wildlife.
